Most of these reviews are based on a single visit, so they should not be taken as a guarantee of consistently good (or bad) food and service. Also, bear in mind that tastes and expectations regarding restaurants are highly personal - what one person loves, another may hate.

Prices, where quoted, are what we paid at the time, including sales tax, but not tips or the cost of any alchoholic drinks. GB pound equivalents are based on an exchange rate of $1.89 per pound. Note that prices on menus do not include the sales tax of 6.5% or 7%, depending on which county you are in. Also, it is normal to leave a tip of about 15% in US restaurants - less indicates that you were in some way dissatisfied with the service and of course you can always leave more if you thought it was really good.

Many of these restaurants are chains and there may be more than one located in the Orlando / Kissimmee area - if you do phone ahead to book, check the exact location of the place you are booking, as mistakes could be embarrassing...

Sharks Underwater Grill, Seaworld
Brilliant. An interesting and varied menu. Good service, great food and a stunning, hypnotic view. I would buy a Seaworld ticket just to get into this restaurant. One long wall is a floor-to-ceiling window onto a huge aquarium with sharks, groupers, rays and many other species cruising together (they must be even better fed than the diners they seem to be watching). Choose from chicken, steak, tuna, crabcakes … in a style described as "Floribbean". The seats in the booths are too soft and deep, but you will soon forget this as you are entranced by the view. I wonder how many customers have to be forcibly removed at the end of the meal? We walked straight in, but it was late afternoon and I think we were lucky. Dinner was $23.10 / £12.22 per person. - SJB June, 2004 Phone:

Romano's Macaroni Grill, Hwy 192, Kissimmee
We had a great evening in the Macaroni Grill. The atmosphere manages to be lively yet relaxed at the same time. Service is friendly and prompt. This is another restaurant with a good menu and food that is every bit as good as it sounds. Steak, chicken, seafood, pasta, pizza... Booking is advisable at busy times. Dinner was $23.78 / £12.58 per person. - SJB June, 2004 Phone:

Red Lobster
Great if you like lobster - and a good selection of other foods as well. The surroundings are pleasant enough, but functional rather than beautiful. Service was friendly and helpful if a bit slow. There are several of these in the area - we visited 7780 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial HWY, Kissimmee (Hwy 192). Dinner was $26.24 / £13.88 per person. - SJB June, 2004 Phone:

Denny's, 7631 W Irlo Bronson Hwy (192), Kissimmee
A well-known chain; there are several of these along the 192. Burgers, bacon, sausages, steak, eggs, omelettes, salads … (similar to Little Chef in the UK). Food was ok, but perhaps slightly disappointing compared with the promise of the menu. Service was too slow. Pretty good choice and reasonable value for money at $7.56 / £4.00 per person for lunch. - SJB June, 2004 Phone:

Cracker Barrel
A shop and a restaurant. The restaurant has an old world feel, with service that was prompt and friendly. There was a choice of menu (breakfast or lunch) at lunchtime when we visited and specialities depending on the day. The food is advertised as traditional country cooking and the usual US-sized servings didn`t disappoint, hickory smoked ham, sawmills gravy, sourdough bread and salads were very tasty and well presented. Cost approx $10 (£5.29) per-person with plenty left for later in the "to go" boxes. Various sites around Orlando and Kissimmee. We visited US192-Silk Road. - LB June, 2004 Phone:

Planet Hollywood, Downtown Disney
Planet Hollywood is an experience you should try at least once. This is a fantastic setting with a very lively atmosphere. If you want a quiet evening out, go somewhere else. Choice of food is ok and the quality is good. Service is bright and bubbly and pretty well timed. Dinner was $31.78 / £16.81 per person, so it's not cheap. - SJB September, 2004 Phone:

Hanamizuki (Japanese), International Drive
Excellent service, though English not a strong point, so it helps if you are not totally clueless about Japanese food. At one point, we had 4 people at the table trying to decypher our questions! The interior is smart and minimalist. As far as we could tell, the menu was reasonably authentic and not over-westernised and the food was very good. One dessert deserves special mention: the "Sake Sherbet" (sorbet) was excellent - really light, delicate and refreshing. We payed $25.82 / £13.66 per person for dinner.

Siam Orchid (Thai), Universal Blvd
Plenty of choice on the menu (not all spicy-hot) and plenty of advice for the uninitiated. An imposing building with a nice lakeside view. Service was prompt. The food was subtley different from similar dishes in the UK, but very good nevertheless. Someone else very kindly (and unexpectedly) picked-up the bill, so I can only guess at the prices - probably about $30 / £15.87 per head. - SJB September, 2004 Phone:

Passage to India, Hwy 192
This restaurant was small and plain and the paper tablecloths added the final touch to an authentic "Bradford Curry House" ambience. The service was remarkably inattentive - we came away with the distinct impression that our waiter was also cooking the food and making deliveries for a thriving take-out trade. Having said all this, the food was good, the waiter/chef/driver was friendly and helpful and we had a good time. Visitors from the UK may enjoy (but fail to recognise) a USA version of the classic british dish "Chicken Tikka Massala". Dinner was $26.45 / £13.99 per person, which seemed slightly expensive.

Rainforest Cafe, Animal Kingdom
I have to admit to being biased here - I think most of the cafes and restaurants in Disney theme parks are overpriced and I wasn't dissapointed. The food is good, but not great and it doesn't quite merit the price tag. The atmosphere is busy and noisy with mechanical apes springing into animated action every 10 minutes or so. I guess the kids like it, but they're not paying. We enjoyed the starters and the non-alchoholic cocktails were very good - be careful with these as they are deceptively filling and could leave you struggling with your main course. Service is ok, but we felt too rushed. Our main course arrived when we were only half-way through the starters. Note that Rainforest Cafe is a chain which is independent of Disney - you can access this restaurant without going into Animal Kingdom. We payed $28.12 / £14.88 per person for dinner (including some cocktails). - SJB September, 2004 Phone:

We've been back a few times, so it can't be too bad. This is a Steak and Seafood place that looks slightly past its sell-by date. It has a novel layout with a mini golf course on top and a waterfall in the centre. Magic Mining has a reasonable menu and good quality food that is good value for money. Dinner was $18.98 / £10.04 per person. - SJB September, 2004 Phone:

We visited this buzzing Italian theme restaurant twice during our stay and have on a previous holiday sampled the one on International Drive. All our party of 10 really enjoyed the meals here, with its friendly and efficient service. You can relax with a drink while you wait for your table and absorb the atmosphere. Beware of ordering a starter and a main course if you don't have a hearty appetite or for children as this restaurant serves a delicious complimentary salad and salted rolls while you're waiting for your meal, you might struggle to squeeze a sweet in! Well worth a visit at around $15 / £7.94 a head for 2 courses.

Brilliant for breakfast, we filled up for the day with one of the numerous breakfast specials which included pancakes on the side, dripping with maple syrup and as much coffee or juice for the little ones, as we could drink. Cheap $5-7 (£2.65 - £3.70) for a huge breakfast. - MM February, 2005 Phone:

We tried the Denny's on Highway 192 and we were disappointed, not as great value for money and the service was very slow! So, don't rely on chains being the same in different locations.

This is the place to visit for a 'fill up for the day' breakfast, which we found was a good idea if you're visiting one of the theme parks, don't worry you'll definitely walk off the calories. This restaurant offers something for everyone, masses of choice; my children couldn't believe there was ice-cream and sprinkles for breakfast if they could stomach it. You can order an omelette with fillings of your choice and watch it being prepared, not sure about the breakfast flavoured pizza!! You pay a set price at the till when you enter and then visit the extensive hot and cold buffet as many times as you like. You server will bring you clean plates and fresh cups of coffee/tea as often as is necessary. Very busy on the morning we left for home, maybe other departing holiday makers had the same idea as us. Adults $7 (£3.70) / Children $5 (£2.65). - MM February, 2005 Phone:

We had visited this restaurant on our previous holiday to Florida and wanted to take our friends, I don't think anyone was disappointed. For myself I thought it looked a little run down but the food and service were excellent. The men all had T Bone steaks and raved about them for days afterwards, those of us with slightly less hearty appetites settled for chicken and more moderately sized steaks, pitchers of beer were the best value for money served in ice cold glasses brought straight from the freezer, the children as is often the case in restaurants in Florida were served with never emptying glasses of soda. I thought it was a little more expensive than other meals we had, but still great value for money compared to meals back home in England. Oh, and it's the only restaurant where we were served proper American corn bread, delicious! 2 courses $20 / £10.58 per head. - MM February, 2005 Phone:

McDonalds, International Drive, near Belz Factory Outlet
I can honestly say I'm not a fan of McDonalds; however I think I could be converted if the food in others were as good as this one. A very extensive menu and certainly not what I expected, along with the usual burgers there were exotic wraps and panini's, I had Portobello Eggplant, which consisted of roasted Portobello mushrooms, roasted red peppers, sautéed spinach, lightly breaded eggplant (aubergine) and provolone cheese on a sun-dried tomato ciabatta roll, not quite the quarter-pounder I'm used to in the McDonalds back home. The service let it down a little with some quite nonchalant staff at the counter, but I'd put that down to them having a bad day. They even had a gourmet menu, which we didn't sample but I'd definitely like to go back and give it a try. Fast food meal $8-10 / £4.23-5.29 per head.

McDonalds USA
Sangam (Indian), Polo Park West, Hwy 27
When we visited Sangam, it had been open for about 6 months. The immediate impression was of a large, slightly bare room that was not quite finished yet. So you won't be bowled-over by the luxurious surroundings, but the quality of the food on offer makes a visit well worth while. The food we tried was similar to indian food in the UK, but still not quite the same (which is not necessarily a bad thing). There was plenty of flavour and the hot (spicy) dishes actually were reasonably hot. The staff were very helpful and were happy to discuss or explain the meals on offer and even adjust them to suit individual tastes. Freshly-made mango lassi (a yoghurt-based drink) was a perfect, refreshing accompaniment. I managed to lose the bill, but prices were similar to those at "Passage to India". - SJB July, 2005 Phone:

Bahama Breeze, International Drive
Bahama Breeze has an excellent reputation - if you visit, you will find many of your fellow diners are not tourists, but residents from the Orlando area. The atmosphere is great - relaxed, but with a buzz. We were convinced we had made a good choice before we got anywhere near a dining table. The cocktails are famous and they lived-up to expectations, with lots of interesting variations on old favourites. The menu looks exciting, as expected, with a strong carribean theme and we struggled to make our choices. Against these expectations, we were slightly dissapointed to find the food good rather than great. Service was lively, informative and timely, though the smiles sometimes seemed a little forced. It was very busy and quite late - maybe we were a little tired. We will certainly go back and try Bahama Breeze again. Warning - the starters are huge, so be careful not to over-order. About $27 / £14.30 per head. - SJB July, 2005 Phone:
